Samsung launches its new galaxy series smart phone “GALAXY- Y”.This phone was announced in august 2011 and released in October 2011. The Y of Galaxy series stands for “Young”. It is an affordable phone for teens. The Galaxy Y is small and compact and with just a 3.0-inch screen, it’s clearly designed for those with small hands. It’s quite light at just 97.5g.

General Specifications and Display:

It is quad band phone which works on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSDPA 900/2100 network. It has a 3.0 inches TFT capacitive multi touchscreen with 256k colors and resolution of 240×320 pixels with pixel density of 133 ppi.

Processor, OS and Functionality:

It has 830 MHz ARMv6 processor. It is bundled with latest android OS 2.3.6(Gingerbread) with a stripped down version of Touch Wiz UI.For connectivity it has GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Hotspot functionality and Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP and a micro usb port. It has accelerometer, proximity, compass sensors.

The handset has a music player that supports MP3, MP4 and WAV formats. It also has a powerful FM radio to easily listen to music. A 3.5 mm stereo headphone plug helps protect the quality of music on the phone.


The Phone has a 180MB internal memory that can easily expanded with the help of micro SD card slot which supports up to 32 GB. The phone has 290MB of user available ram to run applications smoothly.


It has 2MP camera with 3 different shooting modes single shot, smile shot, panorama. It can capture videos at QVGA resolution with 15fps. It boasts of awesome features like Geo tagging, smile detection and auto focus. The phone has an image and video editor to allow editing of the picture on the handset itself.

Battery & Miscellaneous:

The Samsung Galaxy Y has 1200 mAh battery that supports up to 9 hours of talk time on 2G networks and up to 5 hrs. Of talk time on 3G networks. It has awesome standby time of 400 hours and 350 hours on 2G and 3G networks respectively.

This mobile phone is preloaded with Social hub application that integrates you mails, calendars and information in one place and keeps updated. It is available in 3 colors metallic gray, silver, and white.

It is loaded with some apps like Google search, maps, Gmail, YouTube, calendar, Google talk, Picasa integration, quick office document viewer, swipe input etc.

The Galaxy Y isn’t full of the latest tech. It keeps things neat and simple at a very reasonable price. There’s a good package of preinstalled apps and a full connectivity set. This is a basic smartphone but one that looks up-to-date.
